By Aesop as retold by Rebecca Lunsford
There once lived two roosters who each thought they should be the one to rule over the flock of chickens. The two roosters would talk behind each other’s back, saying that they were the best rooster who had ever lived.
One day the two roosters ran into each other in front of the chicken coop and began to brag and insult each other. They slowly grew more and more aggressive until they finally began to viciously brawl. The two roosters pecked, hopped, and attacked one another until at last one of the roosters were forced to retreat, and fled the scene. The defeated rooster didn’t stop running until they made it under a large cherry tree that was just beginning to bloom with pink and white flowers. Meanwhile the triumphant rooster paraded about and flapped un onto the chicken coop, perching there and crowing loudly.
Not too long after this an eagle was soaring above the trees tops, when he spotted the cocky bird crowing and flapping from his spot atop the chicken coop. The eagle, thinking the rooster would make a good meal, swooped down and grabbed him in his long, sharp talons before fling off into the sky again. The defeated rooster watched in amazement, not able to believe his luck, but he quickly recovered and ran back to the chicken coop and was able to rule over the rest of the chickens without dispute.
