One day a frail, old lion wearily crawled back into his cave. He had just spent the past several hours trying to catch his dinner, but the lion had found that he was no longer fast enough to catch the animals of the forest. As the lion laid on the floor of his den an idea came into his head. If he could not go to his dinner then perhaps he could bring his dinner to him. A plan began to form in the lion’s mind and by the time the lion drifted off to sleep, he was ready to put his plan into action.
News travels fast in the forest and by late morning every critter big and small knew of the sick lion. All throughout the day creatures would arrive at the lion’s cave to pay their respects and show their sympathy. But whenever an animal grew close enough to the lion, the lion would suddenly pounce and feast on the unfortunate creature. After he finished his meal he would bury the remains underground outside his cave so as not to tip off the next animal.
Soon a fox arrived at the lion’s den but as he approached the fox stopped well outside the mouth of the cave.
“How do you feel?” asked the fox.
“I have felt better,” answered the lion. ”But my hearing is not what it used to be so won’t you come closer?”
“I’m quite comfortable right here thank you. For you see I couldn’t help but notice the many tracks that enter you cave.”
“Many animals have come to visit me,” replied the lion.
“And none seem to be able to leave because no tracks exit your cave.”
“He is wise who is warned by the misfortune of others.”
Nice story!
