This is the last essay from this course so it is a little bit different. I will explain a few of the most important lessons learned from the history of invention and inventors and why I think it is important.
One of the first things I learned is that if one wants to invent something it is important to never give up, many inventors had to power through many tough trials to achieve greatness. George Washiton Carver was a slave at first but he never gave up and made many great scientific discoveries. I think the power to persevere is important because everyone gave up when the going got tough, nothing would ever get done.
Another important lesson I learned was that when one has an invention they are trying to sell, the best way to show off the inventions benefits is to advertise by doing public demonstrations. Several inventors did public demonstrations such as: Elisha Otis who demonstrated the Safety Elevator at the World’s Fair by pulling himself up high on a platform and then cut the rope, but the Safety Elevator did not fall. I think that using public demonstration is important because lots of inventions have been made popular because they used public demonstration.
The third most important lesson I learned was that, once one makes a better invention people don’t just start buying the product. It takes lots of advertising and convincing to get people to buy that person’s invention. Advertising is very important when trying to sell a product, so in a way this lesson connects with the second lesson. Take for instance the Air Brakes, they did not catch on at first but thanks to a near accident when driving a train with the Air Brakes on it to show the company owners the benefits of the Air Brakes, they have become very popular.
Lastly, I will try to apply these lessons to my life whenever I am trying to sell things and if I ever invent something.
